Choosing a therapist: questions worth asking

Stillpoint team · 8 Jul 2026

Qualifications, approach, fees and fit. A short checklist for finding someone you can work with.

The single best predictor of whether therapy works is the relationship between you and your therapist. Training and method matter, but feeling understood matters more.

Check that your therapist is registered with a professional body such as the BACP, UKCP, BABCP or HCPC, and ask which approach they use and why. Ask about fees, how cancellations work and how long they usually expect to work with someone with your concerns.

It is entirely reasonable to speak to more than one person before deciding. Our free twenty-minute introductory calls exist for exactly that reason. Pay attention to how you feel afterwards: lighter, understood, curious? Or on guard?

If you try someone and it is not right, say so. A good therapist will not be offended and will help you find a better fit.
