What actually happens in a first counselling session

Stillpoint team · 14 Sep 2026

Nervous about starting? A plain description of the first fifty minutes, what we ask, what we do not, and how to know if it is the right fit.

Most people arrive at a first session expecting to be analysed. In practice it is much more ordinary. Your counsellor will explain how confidentiality works, ask what brought you in and listen. There is no test and no right answer.

We will usually ask a few practical questions about your health, whether you have had therapy before, and what you hope will change. That is why we ask you to complete a short confidential intake form before your first full session. It saves time and means you can spend the hour on what matters to you.

You will not be pushed to talk about anything you are not ready to. Some people cry, some people laugh, and some people spend most of the first session explaining the practical problem. All of this is normal.

At the end we will agree whether to meet again. If the fit does not feel right, you are free to try another clinician. That is exactly what the free introductory call is for.
